After a couple hours of work, crews have managed to set a derailed hopper upright, sitting in the middle of CO-72. A flatbed truck would be brought in and the hopper loaded on the truck to be taken away from the derailment site.

Union Pacific and Colorado state crews walk around the bridge over CO-72, examining the damage after the MNYRO derailed on its way west. As of this posting, the cause is still under investigation. There was very minimal damage to the tracks and no damage (other than superficial) to the bridge. It looks as though it was a stringlined derailment, meaning the cars were pulled off the tracks.

A few hundred feet from the tracks at the base of Coal Creek Canyon is a CDOT facility. Plows will fill with sand here to keep CO-72 clear in the winter months. CDOT crews said they hear loud crashing sounds and looked out the window to see freight cars rolling down the embankment as the MNYRO derailed.

A look at the eight cars that derailed at the base of Coal Creek Canyon on December 10th. All the cars that derailed were empty, including the sole tank car seen here. The derailment happened around 11:30am. It took crews seven hours to reopen CO-72 and the tracks were open again by 9:00pm.

Whoops! To say that UP's westbound North Yard to Roper manifest had a few problems would be an understatement. 12 cars derailed coming around the curve at the base of Coal Creek Canyon and this was part of the result. Thankfully, nobody was injured in the derailment.

Having now conquered the worst of the grade on the east slope of Soldier Summit, this coal train will soon cross underneath US-6 (to the geographic west side) and arrive at Colton.

This (rare) unit auto rack empty is proceeding west on a clear signal at West Helper. Three AC400CW's were added in Helper (to the front of the train) to assist on the 2.5% grade.

Chances are that DRGW 5371 is about six weeks away from a Triennial inspection at the time of this photo. Unfortunately, triennial inspections cannot be accomplished in Helper or Roper. Therefore, it is likely that the unit will be patched in mid-November 2006.

Stars swirl behind the signal at the east switch of Mounds. Note one star that is inconsistent with the rest (near the top of the photo). That is actually a shooting star streaking through the atmosphere!
