Always nice to see a familiar face in town! Okay, so it may not be obvious at first glance that this is a familiar face. Until September 1, 2005, this was DRGW 3105. It spent nearly five years running as a patched until. However, it recently made a visit to North Little Rock and got truly assimilated by UP!

Although the MNYPU doesn't depart Denver until close to midnight, power for the train has already been spotted on the runaround track at North Yard. A pair of C44AC-CTEs and the Rio Grande Heritage Unit will run the train south.

Union Pacific has a few Track Geometry cars that it keeps on its roster. These cars are self-propelled, can go up to 70 MPH, and can record every detail about and defect in the rails as they move along. I happened to come across the car sitting in the storage yard in North Yard on this Saturday afternoon. I came in on the Limon Sub earlier in the day, and should be heading for the Joint Line the next day.

Even though there isn't any evidence of it in this picture, March is the snowiest month of the year in Colorado. Consequently, UP has been keeping this snow bus on hand, just it case it is needed.

If there is a snow storm in the the area that shuts down highways, this snow bus can be used to transport crews.

I always think it is worthwhile posting pictures of patched units. This AC4400CW was CNW 8829 up until June 2004 when it received its patch. Considering it has been 14 years since the UP/CNW merger, I'd say this unit is looking pretty darn good!

Finally! After several years, I finally got the chance to shoot Ringling Brothers mile-long circus train. This is the "Red Train", one of two trains the circus operates. The other one being the "Blue Train". This train tends to do more shows west of the Mississippi and the Blue Train is usually east of the Mississippi. The circus hauls all of its own equipment, so everything for the shows are kept in these containers!

It is barely 8 o'clock on a fantastic June morning as a yard crew bring out a pair of units that will be used to switch cars at North Yard.

Power on the South Local and the West Local changes fairly often as one (or more) of the units get pushed around for inspections or other duties. For Monday, this should be the trio of units heading south on the Joint Line.

For the second time since it was unveiled in July 2005, the Western Pacific Heritage Unit visits Denver! The unit arrived after midnight the night before on the MRONY. The unit is having issues loading and will probably hang around Denver for a few days.

Moffat Tunnel (UP) Union Pacific, BNSF
UP has been leasing seven units from BNSF for over a week now (BNSF is repaying some horsepower-miles). UP has kept all seven units together on the Moffat working on coal trains. Here, the units are set up in a 5x2 configuration on a coal empty waiting to leave the yard later in the afternoon.

It has been nearly three years since UP 1989 was unveiled in Denver! And in all that time, it has probably spent more than 90% of its time running between Denver and Pueblo overnight on the Joint Line. Happened to catch it hanging around the yard during the day, awaiting its night run to Pueblo ten hours later.

Today, it is ES44ACs and SD70ACes ... 15 years ago, it was SD60Ms! An example was sitting in North Yard on the ready track on this particular afternoon. UP 2463 was delivered in 1992 as UP 6308. In April 2007, this unit got kicked out of the 6300-series to make room for future deliveries.

The two units in the foreground were just delivered back to North Yard from Burnham after a standard 92-day inspection. Other power is serviced in the distance.

I noted a freshly-painted HLCX GP38-2 sitting near the shops at North Yard. This is an interesting unit in that it appears to be a GP40-2 (three radiator fans, etc), there are two exhaust stacks. This shows the un-turbocharged GP38-2 prime mover.
