Once SP 347, UP 6365 is doing its part to push on the tail end of the westbound MNYRO near Chemical, in between Leyden and Rocky.

I might be a smidge biased, seeing as how I've lived my entire life in the Denver area, but I think Denver has a great looking skyline! And a great place to observe it is along CO-72 just west of Leyden.

This eastbound coal load has the standard compliment of three swing helpers coming off the Moffat. Said swing helpers happen to be elephant style for this particular train. Once arriving on Main 2 in Denver, the swing helpers will be cut out.

The silver sides of the aluminum gondolas show up really well in the early morning sunlight. If you look really closely, you can notice a string of light power heading west through Clay in the distance!

An eastbound coal load is about ten miles away from its crew change in Denver. It is a windy but mild morning for the last day of winter.

A trio of GEs on the point (and one on the back) are more than sufficient to take this manifest on its trip west to Roper, UT. However, it must first wait in the siding at Leyden for an eastbound coal train just leaving Rocky.

The MNYRO heads in to the siding at Leyden to meet a morning coal load. Even though it is a bit shorter than normal, the MNYRO still has a single DPU on the tail end.

A relatively short MNYRO approaches the east switch of Leyden on a rather mild last day of winter. The train will take the siding at Leyden to meet an eastbound coal load.

As much as I'm not a fan of the "nose only a mother could love" on the newest EMD power, I also must admit that the SD70ACe is definitely growing on me. While I have always thought of EMD as being really good at aesthetics, the boxy notch-nose doesn't seem to quite fit.

What do you think of the SD70ACe?

For over five years, AC4400CWs and C44ACCTEs have ruled UP trains on the Moffat, including manifests. Most of the time that is still the case. However, when a little variety sneaks in, it is always a welcome treat. Such was the case on this wintery morning as an SD70ACe snuck in to the consist, sandwiched between a pair of C44ACCTEs.

This storm, which left 2-5 inches of the white stuff, snuck up the meteorologists in town! They were expecting a dusting with less than one inch. I wasn't complaining though as the snow blowing off the cars of this MNYRO make for a nice effect as the train knocks down the signal at east Leyden.

The tail end of an eastbound coal train prepares to disappear through the cut just east of 66th Avenue in Arvada. I recall my dad taking a picture from near this location in the late 70s of a westbound DRGW coal empty that had six Tunnel Motors on the point! Time marches on...

This eastbound coal load is approaching the 66th Avenue roughly halfway between Leyden (CP DS011) and Arvada (CP DS007). At Tennyson Street, the train will be relieved by a new crew that will cut out the swing helpers and tie the train down on Bypass Main 1.

Every Rio Grande signal between C&S Junction and the Moffat Tunnel has now been replaced with new signals, with one notable exception. The classic Grande signals still stand at east Leyden. Based on this picture, it is not hard to understand why replacing the signals is necessary. This signal is in fact displaying a red over yellow (Diverging Approach) indication as the approaching MNYRO is taking the siding.

Once numbering 279, at the time of this photo there were only 11 unpatched Espee AC4400CWs left. I suppose that, considering it has been close to 17 years since the UP/SP merger, 11 units isn't that bad! In any case, SP 343 was the third of three units on the head end of the MNYRO on this chilly morning.
