As much as I love Cascade Green, I almost wish the lead unit here had been in the Heritage scheme just so it matched the other three SD40-2's in the set. However, I'm not complaining as the sight and sound of four EMD 645 engines running was beautiful! If you'd like to hear, I recorded a brief clip and posted it along with this shot. Every locomotives that comes out of either Erie, PA (GE) or London, ON (EMD) has a unique serial number stamped somewhere on the frame (called a frame number). This can be useful for railfans because, if a frame number can be found, the original unit to roll out of the factory can then be identified. Here is the frame number on UP 1350 (originally DRGW 3100). The number is 7360-7.

I took this shot looking down on Main 2 and Main 3 just so you could not the debris scattered everywhere. Notice the broken wheel laying next the rail head of Main 3. For those curious, molten sulfur (which is what the derailed train was carrying) is used in producing sulfuric acid, matches, detergents, insecticides and a few other things.

A look down into the trench where the derailment of the molten sulfur train occurred about 36 hours earlier. Molten sulfur isn't toxic, just a bit smelly and very hot! "Molten" sulfur is really just heated elemental sulfur. Over 200 degrees, sulfur becomes "molten". It is dark red in color and had a consistency similar to lava.

On the siding at Broomfield, the crew of this HLAUDEN (Laurel, MT to Denver, CO) is working to reassemble the train. The train is over 7,000 feet long and does not fit in the siding at Broomfield without cutting Nickel Street. Now that both trains it was meeting have passed, its time to rebuild and head to town.
