Amtrak 5, the westbound California Zephyr, is running 12 1/2 hours late as it heads west out of Denver. The train has a clear signal as it approaches the signal bridge at C&S Junction. The last bit of light is quickly fading in the western sky.

My partner, Tim Turley, and I were in the lounge car when this photo was taken. We were on the first trip of the season for Amtrak/Nat'l Park Service Trail & Rails program. We ran out of day light at the Big Ten curve and the rest of the ride was like being in the Moffat Tunnel all the way to Grand Junction. We arrived in Grand Junction at 4 a.m. Friday and then returned to Denver on Amtrak 6 which left Grand Junction at 11:30 a.m. Trails & Rails volunteer rangers will be in the lounge cars of Amtrak 5 & 6 every Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday through August 31, 2008.
