A few miles east of Hanna, WY and the UP 844 is shooting out a bit of black smoke. The diesel on the train is UP 7813. It is an ES44AC delivered to UP a little over a year earlier. It's dynamic brakes are used when proceeding down a grade so the train doesn't have to rely entirely on air brakes. It also serves as a back up (for power) in the event the UP 844 become unable to continue on. Email Questions or Comments to the Webmaster. In fact, thinking back to Saturday, I'm pretty sure I heard UP 7813 in dynamics a couple of times!
