Week Two Complete / UP 1989 Update
News Story Posted By Kevin (Click Name To Email)
Thursday, July 27, 2006 - As you may or may not be aware, UP just finished its second week of major summer maintenance on the Moffat Tunnel Sub. For the past few summers, UP has taken several weeks in the summer to perform major track work including tie replacement and rail replacement. This summer, the track between Tolland and Gore will be getting major work done. The work windows each week are from 8am to 5pm Monday through Thursday. On those days, no trains are allowed in the work zones between the times mentioned, and Amtrak is being re-routed through Wyoming between Denver and Salt Lake City. That does not, however, mean that all rail traffic stops. The MNYRO, for example, which typically leaves between 7 and 9 in the morning is still departing by noon. However, it either ties down in a siding, or the crew waits for the work window to complete. Likewise, a few coal empties are being kicked out of Denver too and are sharing the same fate as the MNYRO. Of course, the Rocky Local still heads west on Tuesdays and Thursdays (unaffected by the work). Then, at 5pm, the flood gates tend to open. This past Monday, North Yard sent six westbound charging out of Denver. I have a a few shots of some of these trains from the week available for viewing.

Secondly, I'm not sure what is currently going on with UP 1989 (Search Photo Gallery). It had been back in captive service on the MNYPU/MPUNY. However, it has been sitting in Pueblo since Tuesday morning now with no apparent movement. Normally, it would have returned north on the MPUNY arriving North Yard Wednesday morning. However, as of now, Thursday night, it remains in Peublo. Will be interesting to see if it makes a run north tonight!
