At Bosler, WY, UP 4014 is steaming east on Main 2. A couple of MOW cars sit in a house track that is located off of Main 1.

Passing through the OS at CP W594 (Lookout), the weather is starting to improve over the morning. The winds are still very high, but the clouds are looking to clear up a bit. UP 4014 and train continue to make their way closer to Laramie for their next stop.

Some nice light broke through for what of the better shots of the day as UP 4014 and train pass through the OS at CP W601 on Main 2, passing by a short MOW crew that is working on Main 1. The tiny town just barely visible in the distance in Rock River, WY, with a population of 211.

Just east of Rock River, WY, UP 4014 and train are rounding the curve on Main 2 on the approach to the crossover at CP W601. Roughly 35 miles to go to Laramie from this spot.

You know I just had to get a nice overhead shot of UP 4014 and train as it approaches the east portal of Hermosa Tunnel on Main 2 on a beautiful Wyoming morning. It is about 60°F out this morning.

UP 4014 is about to enter Hermosa Tunnel on Main 2 on its journey west. UP 1616 and UP 1776 are the two diesels along to help brake for this journey. While the fresh paint on UP 1776 looks amazing and clean, sure wish the unit was painted up in a scheme more representative of the United States 250th birthday.

I really liked this view of the Big Boy Special from the ground as it approaches the east portal of Hermosa Tunnel on Main 2. Note the United States flag and Wyoming State flag on the front of UP 4014.

Coming off of Main 3 at Dale Jct, UP 4014 (the Big Boy), UP 1616 (Abraham Lincoln Unit), and UP 1776 (US 250th) head west on Main 2. I really liked the rocky features of the Wyoming landscape here, along with the snow fences along the tracks.

The train that we've been waiting for! UP 4014 (the Big Boy) leads a passenger special running west on the Overland. The train is headed to California. It will then return east to Cheyenne before departing east on Memorial Day for Washington DC to celebrate the United States Semiquincentennial (250th birthday).

While a westbound manifest, consisting primarily of covered hoppers, disappears into Main 2 at Hermosa, a Sperry Rail (maintenance) truck just emerged from the tunnel on Main 1, heading east.

This rather long westbound manifest on Main 2 has a single ET44AC as a mid-train swing helper as the train disappears into Hermosa Tunnel.

UP 4014 (the Big Boy) is currently stopped on Main 3 at Dale Jct. This westbound manifest beat the passenger special to Dale Jct, and the dispatcher elected to keep the manifest rolling. The train is approaching the east portal of Hermosa Tunnel on Main 2.

One of the biggest complaints about the paint scheme UP has used for the last quarter century is very clearly demonstrated in this shot. The flag that UP added to the long hood, when not properly maintained, can get pretty ragged. In the case of this SD70ACe, it has been largely burned off the long hood. That's likely one of the reasons UP has moved the flag to the sides of the nose with their latest scheme.

With the expense associated with Tier-4 diesel-electric locomotives (both initials and maintenance), the Class 1s are turning toward rebuilds rather than buying new. UP 6931 is a good example, as it has been rebuilt as a C44ACM and repainted in the newest paint scheme.

While I've shot the west portal of Hermosa before, I've never actually shot the east portal of Hermosa. At least, until this morning! An eastbound UP intermodal, with four units on the point, emerges from the tunnel on Main 1. The lead unit is a Tier-4 ET44AC.
