As you can see, Hermosa Tunnel is a very high tunnel. But when the Overland was built, by far the best solution to what is effectively a deep dirt pile here was to dig to tunnels, both 1,800 feet long, through the dirt. You can see a pair of mid-train DPUs in the distance on the S-Curve on Main 3. For those unfamiliar, Union Pacific has two different grades between Cheyenne and Dale Jct (near Hermosa Tunnel). As you can see, quite a few people are starting to gather to witness the westbound run of UP 4014 (the Big Boy) as part of UP's celebration of the United States Semiquincentennial.
