An eastbound UP Z-Train emerges from Hermosa Tunnel on Main 1. As you can see, Hermosa Tunnel is a very high tunnel. But when the Overland was built, by far the best solution to what is effectively a deep dirt pile here was to dig to tunnels, both 1,800 feet long, through the dirt.

Even though the Overland here on the Rawlins Sub has CTC, UP generally follows left-hand running between Cheyenne and Laramie. Here, a westbound manifest is on Main 2, on the approach to the east end of the 1,800-foot long Hermosa tunnel.

A very long manifest rolls west off of Main 3 at Dale Jct with three units on the head end. You can see a pair of mid-train DPUs in the distance on the S-Curve on Main 3. For those unfamiliar, Union Pacific has two different grades between Cheyenne and Dale Jct (near Hermosa Tunnel). Mains 1 and 2 (more or less) follow I-80, while Main 3 runs much further south.

An eastbound UP manifest is on Main 1 at Tie Siding. A single SD70ACe leads the train, which is just a few thousand feet away from Hermosa Tunnel. As you can see, quite a few people are starting to gather to witness the westbound run of UP 4014 (the Big Boy) as part of UP's celebration of the United States Semiquincentennial.

A very long eastbound manifest runs east on Main 1 at Tie Siding, with a single SD70ACe leading on the head end. As you can see, there is a green signal on Tie Siding for a westbound that will run to Laramie on Main 2.

The last shot of the day comes at Tie Siding, just west of the Hermosa Tunnel. Numerous thunderstorms have been rolling through the area and, indeed, it is raining right now as this eastbound passes under the signal bridge at Hermosa Road.

UP 4014 is on a westbound special on Main 1 at Tie Siding. There is no diesel helper on this trip as it was allegedly bad ordered in Cheyenne. The train has three passenger cars, five box cars, seven covered hoppers, and a bay side caboose.

UP 4014 is headed west on Main 1 after emerging from Hermosa Tunnel on a summer run that will take the train through several western states over the next month or so. This was definitely one of my favorite shots of the day, and a great way to start the chase to Rawlins, WY.

This shot almost looks like it could've shot 70 years ago, when Big Boys were found in regular service on the Overland. UP is running this special run of UP 4014 without a diesel helper. Just the Big Boy, a couple of passenger cars, and some pristine UP freight equipment.

UP 4014, the Big Boy, kicks up some smoke and blasts out some steam as it leads a westbound special out of Hermosa Tunnel on Main 1.

It has been a few years (2021, to be exact) since I last got out and shot UP 4014. With the train leaving Cheyenne west on the final day of June, it was time to get some shots. The sole headlight on the Big Boy is illuminated in Hermosa Tunnel on Main 1, about to emerge from the tunnel.

One company that UP ships a lot of container traffic for is Ocean Network Express, or ONE. Their pink containers certainly stand out, and it is interesting just seeing the color pink on a train! Such is the case with this westbound two mile long double stack train between Hermosa Tunnel and Tie Siding.

UP 7394 is the sole mid-train swing helper on this two mile long double stack train. As the train is coming up and over the grade at Hermosa, the train is starting to pick up some speed.

It is 9:50am and UP 7202 and UP 5497 are two of three units on this two mile long westbound double stack train at Hermosa. There is a mid-train swing helper, buried about a mile back in the train.

An AC4400CW and an ES44AC lead a stack train that is close to two miles long through the 1,800 foot long Hermosa Tunnel on Main 1. The train is about 20 minutes ahead of UP 4014, the Big Boy, leading a westbound special.
