It is about 20 minutes before sunset, yet it looks like the "blue hour" has already set in as the sun has descended behind a thick layer of clouds to the west. UP 1943 and two additional units lead a westbound unit oil train around the small bridge over an irrigation ditch just west of the town of Watkins, CO.

The weather on the plains was a little odd on this afternoon. In general, things were sunny...however, there were a few random flurries blowing around. In the summer, these probably would've been random rain showers. This UP special is just east of Strasburg and is approaching a Form B. The bridge over the tracks in Strasburg is being replaced.

There is a bridge on a curve just west of Watkins that works quite well for both eastbounds and westbounds. Here, a westbound UP manifest has an all-EMD consist on the point. The first unit is my personal favorite unit of the last 20 years or so. An SD70M with flared radiators.

UP runs a manifest on the Limon Sub between Denver, CO and Salina, KS several times a week. It seems to be a bit elusive at times, but I happened to come across it just west of Watkins on a frigid January morning.

There are some nice curves along the Limon Sub just west of the small town of Deer Trail. Clouds on this day were wreaking havoc and, as a result, there are quite a few odd shadows being cast on this eastbound coal train.

A field east of Deer Trail had a little bit of flooding, setting up a nice reflection shot for UP 1983 and UP 8224 on a beautiful June morning. Dark clouds make for a nice backdrop as the blade train passes by the field.
