Got the blues? A quartet of ET44ACs are being moved to Denver on the ZCHCDEN. These Tier 4 emissions units, built by GE, are going to be tested in coal service. As of January 1, 2015, all locomotives sold in the United States are required to meet Tier 4 standards.

Got power? Despite the eight units on the point of this Chicago-Denver Z-Train, only the first four are online. All four blue units are DIC (Dead In Consist). They are General Electric test units. Specifically, they are ET44ACs, built to meet the EPA Tier 4 requirements for emissions. Rumor has it that they are going to be put in coal service for testing.

As you can see, BNSF is extending the siding of Hudson to the east. If you look closely, you can see a yellow-over-red signal in the distance. That is the current east end of the siding, some 9,300 feet away! Yep, the siding is about to grow by 9,300 feet.

BNSF is sinking some capital into the Brush Sub in 2015. Multiple sidings are being lengthened and the siding of Hudson is no exception! The siding will go from being roughly 6,200 feet long to over 15,000 feet long! There have been rumors that BNSF would like to (eventually) add a second main track along the entire Brush Sub. One wonders if there will be a crossover in the middle of the siding?

A pair of SD70s (one an SD70MAC and one an SD70ACe) sit in the house track at Hudson. It was immediately obvious why they were there, although I assume it has to do with all the maintenance BNSF has been doing on the Brush Sub over the summer.

In the distance, you can see the Hudson Local sitting on the siding, waiting to head back to Denver.

The Hudson Local sits in the siding at Hudson, patiently waiting to see what the Brush Sub dispatcher has in mind. It is a busy day on the Brush Sub with many siding plugged and both the ZCHCDEN (hottest BNSF train in to Denver) and Amtrak may be coming in the picture soon.

When this coal load derailed at the west switch of Hudson, it broke apart in to three pieces. Here, the front third (to the right) stayed on the tracks. The middle third can be seen back a bit. The last few cars on that section derailed, but stayed upright. The final section of the train had the most cars derail (and about 20 of them fell on their side).

BNSF 8802 was the lead unit on this westbound coal load that derailed at the west end of Hudson. Here, a fresh crew has arrived to assist in the cleanup operation. Later in the afternoon, the crew would take the front portion of the train that didn't derail down to the siding of Tonville.

Coal mixes with dirt, which mixes with steel a wood, among the wreckage of a derail coal train at the west switch of Hudson. The derailment was causing a lot of cars on I-76 to slow down and check out the scene. Local PD was patrolling the shoulder, keeping cars from stopping on the shoulder.

When this BNSF coal train derailed, cars "accordioned" (as they often do in derailments), resulting in cars piled on top of cars and some of the cars perpendicular to the track. Or, to where the track was! Must have been an amazing site to see when this happened.

A couple of wheel sets and ties rest, largely buried in coal, after the westbound coal load derailed at the west switch of Hudson on the BNSF Brush Sub. Most likely these hoppers will be sent to the scrapper (if not scrapped onsite) as it is unlikely they will be able to be repaired.

When this westbound coal load derailed, it didn't only take out 25-30 hoppers and track, but it also took out a switch at the signal at the west end of Hudson. You can see the signal mast (with its signal heads now missing) here, twisted among the derailed hoppers.

These hopper cars almost aren't recognizable as hopper cars after a derailment at the west switch of Hudson. There is a certainly amount of dark irony in the advertised "Rapid Discharge" on the side of one of the hoppers. Surprisingly, it appears that most of the coal stayed in that particular hopper.
