I grew up in the diesel era, but I am not going to lie that there is nothing like seeing the 4-8-8-4 "Big Boy" in command of a train. UP is taking the engine to Roseville and back over the next several weeks. The train will operate over Donner Pass and it will run through Feather River Canyon as well.

Many people, myself included, were expecting UP 4014 to head west from Tie Siding to Laramie on Main 3. But UP instead decided to send it west on Main 1. Here, just east of Laramie, engineer Ed Dickens looks at the window as the train is approaching its stop in Laramie.

The train is about to pass underneath Clark Street not far north of the Laramie Depot. The train is heading west on Main 1, and will remain on Main 1 all the way to Rawlins, about 120 miles further down the tracks.

After a stop in Laramie to lube up the gears, UP 844 and crew are ready to head west. Quite a show is put on for spectators as the brakes are released and the train steams up (quite literally) to depart. Note the crowd of people gathered to witness the event.
