I grew up with F40PHs on Amtrak. Already being an EMD fan (thanks to Rio Grande), the F40PHs were just perfect on Amtrak. I was very sad to see them displaced by P42DCs (from GE). I also regretted the fact that they had virtually disappeared by the digital era (when I really got into photography). Amtrak sold off a good portion of the ones that had been on the roster. Many more were converted into cab control baggage cars. Basically, the prime mover was removed and the long hood converted to a baggage area. Then, the control stand was kept in the cab, and the F40PH could be used on trains that move both directions throughout the course of the day (mainly commuter trains). Amtrak did, however, keep AMTK 406 and has been running it on the Exhibit Train. This shot was really rough, with half the unit in the shade and half of it in the bright sunlight.
