Over the next decade, as ES44ACs and SD70ACes started to come on the scene, the SD70MAC presence started decreasing. Today, SD70MACs have almost completely disappeared. Most are in long term storage, and many have met the torch and been scrapped. Over the course of the two days I spent in the Powder River Basin, BNSF 8908 here was the only SD70MAC that I saw. Since MRL SD70ACes do not have PTC installed, they likely will not lead any trains again on BNSF until they are repainted BNSF orange (and have PTC installed). This BNSF coal train is creeping along at about 2 MPH, still in the process of loading. Contractors operate the train for loading rather than crews from BNSF (or Union Pacific). Three trains are empty and waiting to be loaded. One train has already loaded and is waiting for a crew to take it east. One line of cars - the second from the right - is a string of empty hoppers currently being stored as there is no demand for them right now.
