From around 1996 until 2005 or so, BNSF's SD70MACs reigned on coal train. Over the next decade, as ES44ACs and SD70ACes started to come on the scene, the SD70MAC presence started decreasing. Today, SD70MACs have almost completely disappeared. Most are in long term storage, and many have met the torch and been scrapped. Over the course of the two days I spent in the Powder River Basin, BNSF 8908 here was the only SD70MAC that I saw.

Two empty coal trains are waiting to head to the load out at Antelope Mine as one train comes out, currently still in the process of loading and moving along at about 2 MPH. Another load is waiting for a crew to take it eastbound over Logan Hill.

I came across a second MRL SD70ACe for the day, this one the rear DPU on a coal empty that is waiting to load at the Antelope Mine. Since MRL SD70ACes do not have PTC installed, they likely will not lead any trains again on BNSF until they are repainted BNSF orange (and have PTC installed).

You can see the mine loadout for Antelope Mine in the distance. This BNSF coal train is creeping along at about 2 MPH, still in the process of loading. Contractors operate the train for loading rather than crews from BNSF (or Union Pacific).

Figured I'd nab a shot of this ET44AC, bringing up the rear of a coal empty that is waiting to be taken into Antelope Mine for loading.

Two coal empties are waiting to be taken into the Antelope Mine to be loaded. As you can see, Antelope has five tracks here off the mains at Converse Junction.

The five staging tracks at Antelope Mine are currently all filled up with trains. Three trains are empty and waiting to be loaded. One train has already loaded and is waiting for a crew to take it east. One line of cars - the second from the right - is a string of empty hoppers currently being stored as there is no demand for them right now. The empty set with the sole SD70ACe for power is currently move away from the camera at 2 MPH, getting ready to load.

BNSF 9063, the rear DPU on a coal empty, is slowly moving away from the camera at 2 MPH as this particular empty prepares to go under the tipple to load up with coal. It is one of three empties waiting for its turn to load.
