As UP 844 comes around the south leg of the wye at Speer Jct, a westbound Z-Train passes by on Main 3 in the background. UP 844 is slowly pulling the train through the wye and on to the Greeley Sub. Once the entire train is on the Greeley Sub on the single main, a pair of diesel engines on the back of the train will pull the train on the track in the foreground, back to Cheyenne.

UP 844 gets a free ride (in reverse) as a pair of diesel units pull the Frontier Days trains down Main 4 at Speer Jct. At the far end of the wye, UP 844 will again take control and pull through one leg of the wye. Then, the diesels will pull for the return trip to Cheyenne. Note the clear signal on Main 3 for a Z-Train that is coming out of Cheyenne.

In order for the Cheyenne Frontier Days train to make the return trip from Cheyenne to Denver, the train has to be wyed (turned around). The nearest wye to Cheyenne is over six miles away at Speer Jct. UP 844 making that reverse move would take hours! So, UP has a better solution. A pair of engines simply hook on to the tail end of the train and pull it to Speer Jct. By doing this, there are no speed restrictions. Here, a pair of units pulls the train on Main 4 toward the first leg of the wye at CP W517.

A pair of AC4400CWs, one of Southern Pacific ancestry, push on the tail end of a load coal train up through Speer Jct. The head end of the train is now on the Greeley Sub and pulling toward Denver. The train is ultimately headed for the Nixon power plant in Colorado Springs.

A southbound coal load pulls toward Speer Jct on Main 4 with a trio of elephant-style GEs on the point. This train loaded at the North Antelope Mine in the Powder River Basin and is actually headed for the Nixon power plant in Colorado Springs!

UP's tracks west of Cheyenne offer an interesting configuration. Mains 1 and 2 head directly west toward Hermosa Tunnel and Laramie. Mains 3 and 4 curve south and run to Speer Jct. At Speer Jct, the Greeley Sub (toward Denver) breaks off and Mains 3 and 4 curve west. Then, the mains converge into a single main track. This track (Main 3) also runs to Hermosa, but as a single track on a completely different grade from Mains 1 and 2. The grade on Main 3 isn't nearly as steep as on Main 1 and 2, so heavy westbounds, such as the grain train in this shot, are frequently routed over Main 3 to Hermosa.

Passengers from the Cheyenne Frontier Days steam train are disembarking and getting ready to ride some buses to the Frontier Days celebration. However, several are taking advantage of the opportunity to get some pictures of UP 844, sitting on Main Track P1 at the station.

Hello old friend! The Rio Grande heritage unit has done a great job of avoiding Denver for the past few years. This is the first time I've seen it since July 2011. Hard to believe that it just celebrated its 10th birthday in June. Today, it got the honor of assisting on the Cheyenne Frontier Days train.

It certainly seemed fitting to get a roster shot of UP 844 as it arrived in Cheyenne. After not having been under its own steam in three years, it sure looked good rolling in to Cheyenne on a beautiful Saturday morning.

Running almost precisely on time, UP 844 arrives in Cheyenne with the Cheyenne Frontier Days train in tow. The train is currently on Main 4, but is about to cross over to Main 1 at CP W511. It will then pull in to the station and passengers will begin to disembark.

A couple of miles west of Cheyenne finds a manifest on the move on UP's Laramie Subdivision. The train is on UP's busiest route...the Overland Route. Traveling on Main 2 at the moment, the train will change crews in Cheyenne and the new crew will keep the train rolling east toward Bailey Yard in North Platte, NE.

A westbound ballast train pulls out of the Cheyenne Yard, ready to head west on the Laramie Sub. The train is on Main 4, crossing underneath the BNSF Front Range Sub. The train is on Main 4 because it will actually swing south and go through Speer Junction before heading west on Main 3 to Dale Jct. Main 3 is on a totally separate grade from Mains 1 and 2 between Cheyenne and Dale Jct (near Hermosa Tunnel). Main 3 is longer, but the grade is much lower, so heavy westbounds, such as this ballast train, frequently take Main 3.

An eastbound grain train comes around the bend at Borie on Main 1. If you look closely, you'll notice a track running across the picture coming out left from the near the signals. This is the "Borie Cutoff", which runs from Mains 1 and 2 over to Speer and Mains 3 and 4.

The journey is almost over! It has been a beautiful ride for passengers on Cheyenne Frontier Days, but the (morning) ride is nearly over. The train just received permission to enter "Form B" limits at Cheyenne and will cross over from Main 4 to Main 1 at CP W511. A "Form B" is a special form that allows train maintenance to occur on the tracks. No train can enter (or, once coming to a stop, move within) Form B limits without explicit verbal consent from the track foreman in charge.

Old meets new! On the right side of this picture, we find a trio of SD70s (an SD70ACe sandwiched by two SD70Ms) on a train stopped on Main 1. The power on that train is all from the 21st century. Meanwhile, on the left side of the picture, we have a trio of E9s (an E9B sandwiched, of course, by two E9As) and a DDA40X. The E9s haven't seen revenue service since the 1950s! The DDA40X is only slightly more recent, last seeing revenue service in the 1970s.
