UP 4014 is headed west on Main 1 after emerging from Hermosa Tunnel on a summer run that will take the train through several western states over the next month or so. This was definitely one of my favorite shots of the day, and a great way to start the chase to Rawlins, WY.

This shot almost looks like it could've shot 70 years ago, when Big Boys were found in regular service on the Overland. UP is running this special run of UP 4014 without a diesel helper. Just the Big Boy, a couple of passenger cars, and some pristine UP freight equipment.

UP 4014, the Big Boy, kicks up some smoke and blasts out some steam as it leads a westbound special out of Hermosa Tunnel on Main 1.

It has been a few years (2021, to be exact) since I last got out and shot UP 4014. With the train leaving Cheyenne west on the final day of June, it was time to get some shots. The sole headlight on the Big Boy is illuminated in Hermosa Tunnel on Main 1, about to emerge from the tunnel.

UP 7394 is the sole mid-train swing helper on this two mile long double stack train. As the train is coming up and over the grade at Hermosa, the train is starting to pick up some speed.

It is 9:50am and UP 7202 and UP 5497 are two of three units on this two mile long westbound double stack train at Hermosa. There is a mid-train swing helper, buried about a mile back in the train.

An AC4400CW and an ES44AC lead a stack train that is close to two miles long through the 1,800 foot long Hermosa Tunnel on Main 1. The train is about 20 minutes ahead of UP 4014, the Big Boy, leading a westbound special.

A very long westbound stack train is current in Hermosa Tunnel on Main 1. The headlight of the lead unit is lighting the way as the train is about to emerge from the west portal. Note that you can see the stacks through the Main 2 tunnel.
