It is one of only a handful of tunnels on UP's Overland Route, and certainly the most famous. The double-bore tunnel is just shy of 2,000 feet in length, running through relatively soft dirt near the top of Sherman Hill. I was happy I had the chance to capture UP 4014 and train approaching the west portal of the tunnel on Main 1, on its return journey to home (Cheyenne). This westbound manifest beat the passenger special to Dale Jct, and the dispatcher elected to keep the manifest rolling. The train is approaching the east portal of Hermosa Tunnel on Main 2. The flag that UP added to the long hood, when not properly maintained, can get pretty ragged. In the case of this SD70ACe, it has been largely burned off the long hood. At least, until this morning! An eastbound UP intermodal, with four units on the point, emerges from the tunnel on Main 1. The lead unit is a Tier-4 ET44AC. As you can see, Hermosa Tunnel is a very high tunnel. But when the Overland was built, by far the best solution to what is effectively a deep dirt pile here was to dig to tunnels, both 1,800 feet long, through the dirt.
