Anytime UP runs a steam train, they include at least one diesel unit. It is used as an assist in the event the steam engine needs it, but more commonly is used to help with (dynamic) braking and slowing the train down.

UP 4014 offers up a fair amount of smoke and steam as it crosses Kiowa Creek. The Big Boy is using two "water bottles" to provide its water. The two yellow cars directly behind UP 4014 are both filled with water for use by UP 4014 on the trip.

Union Pacific's fully restored "Big Boy", UP 4014, leads a train across Kiowa Creek just east of Bennett. UP 4014 left Cheyenne two months ago for a long tour around the system and is heading back toward Denver. It will layover for the night before returning to Cheyenne the next day.

UP 4014 crosses over a currently dried up Kiowa Creek on the Limon Sub between Bennett and Strausburg. UP 4014 is wrapping up a two month trip across much of UP's system.
