Peak-a-boo! With the five mile journey from the end of the line to Burns Junction nearly complete (at 10 MPH), the Buck Local will join up with the siding at Burns Junction.

It is a beautiful, 70°F Spring day in Colorado as the Buck Local heads back toward Burns Junction. The Exempla Good Samaritan Medical Center, which opened in December 2004, is behind the train. Longs Peak is towering over them all.

Proof-positive that the Lafayette Branch is not at any risk of getting abandoned anytime in the immediate future! A tamper is working to do whatever it is that tampers do (see the comments with regards to this statement - hopefully you'll get a laugh) just past the highway 287 grade crossing.

The same Valmont train that I shot three days earlier has been emptied and is now heading back to Denver. The two UP units from Saturday are the sole power for the empty train on this Tuesday.

Seeing as how it is only a matter of time before the Heritage paint scheme disappears, it seems prudent to try to shoot it as often as possible! BNSF 1020 was the third of three units on the HDENLAU.

Sitting at Burns Junction near the north end of the siding of Broomfield, BNSF 5082 leads the daily Denver to Laurel, MT manifest. The train will hold for the Valmont coal empty and the Longmont Turn.

Under flat, gray skies, this 6,700-foot QDENTAC is rolling north after meeting a train at Broomfield. The crew on the train have received a "Box 13" on their track warrant, indicating that they can leave the north switch of the siding in the reverse position. The next train will receive a "Box 12", instructing them to realign the switch for the main track.

I always enjoy shooing meets between trains at Broomfield because the siding and the main are on completely different alignments throughout most of the siding. This is because the tracks used to be two different (main)lines, owned by different railroads. Here, the QDENTAC is on the siding, which is several feet higher than the HLAUDEN on the main.

All three orange paint schemes that BNSF has had are represented in this picture! The QDENTAC is being led by a Heritage 2 C44-9W and a Heritage C44-9W. The single DPU on the HLAUDEN sports the New Image scheme.

In the foreground, the HLAUDEN heads south on the main track while the QDENTAC is coming north on the siding above. The crews of both trains talked to each other to time the meet as well as they could. The QDENTAC is 6,700 feet long and the HLAUDEN is 7,700 feet long. This means car traffic at Nickel Street is going to be blocked for awhile!

The second northbound for the day, the QDENTAC, is pulling into the siding at Broomfield. This doublestack train is one of the longest that runs in the Denver-metro area. Originating at the Rennicks Intermodal Facility in Denver, the train is headed for Tacoma, WA.

The clouds have set in on this Saturday morning as the Valmont coal load passes underneath the Northwest Parkway in Broomfield. The train is climbing is relatively steep grade, working toward Louisville.

For a few months, the Valmont coal train loaded exclusively on BNSF in the Powder River Basin in Wyoming. That has changed, however, as the train is now loading in western Colorado (on UP) once again. As a result, the power on the Front Range Sub is once again mixed between BNSF and UP as the Valmont train wraps around Church Ranch Lake.

Pulling out of the siding at Broomfield, the northbound "Stinky Slinky" (which carries molten sulfur) is starting to pick up a little speed. The train is empty, headed for Bonneville, WY. Considering the high (backlit) summer sun, black and white seemed like a good choice for this shot!

After meeting the northbound "Stinky Slinky" (sulfur train), the southbound HLAUDEN starts to pull toward the south siding switch of Broomfield. An interesting note...the station sign of "Broomfield" has been removed and smaller signs have been added at either end of the siding that say "NSS Broomfield" and "SSS Broomfield" for "North Siding Switch" and "South Siding Switch", respectively.
