The Buck Local has to back up the Lafayette branch from Burns Junction all the way to the end of the line, which is about 5 miles. This ex-BN caboose (or shoving platform) helps to keep the crew a bit more comfortable when making the reverse move!

After switching out cars near the end of the Lafayette branch, the Buck Local is now ready to head back toward Burns Junction at the main at Broomfield. The train is coming across the Coal Creek trestle. The stickers on GP40M #3005 indicate the unit is equipped with "Smart Start". If the unit idles for a long enough period, it will shut down to conserve fuel and reduce emissions, then auto-start again when it is moved out of idle.

The Buck Local, with a pair of classic EMD Geeps, back over the Coal Creek trestle in Lafayette. There is a lumber company here that receives bulk head flats and the crew on the train is working to spot the cars.

Not more than a minute after the sun ducked behind the mountains of the front range, light power from the Longmont Turn passes through Louisville. The light power was the second in a string of southbounds coming down the Front Range Sub.
