When the line over Soldier Summit was being built, engineers had to find a way to gain a lot of altitude in a short distance. The loops at Gilluly were the answer. Here, a westbound coal load has come around a 180 degree curve near the west end of the siding of Gilluly. Note the defunct house track on the right side of the shot.
