UP 844 is a Northern-type 8-4-8 locomotive that was built by the American Locomotive Company (ALCO) in December 1944 as the last steam engine delivered to UP. It ran in revenue service until 1959. In 1960, it was saved from scrapping, to be preserved. Soon after, it started running in excursion service and has now running much larger (and far more miles) in excursion service than it did in revenue service in the 1940s and 1950s! For the eight mile reverse move, the train was good for 30 MPH, except through crossovers where it was restricted to about 15 MPH. The train will stop in Cheyenne in order to get a crew change. The lead unit is an ES44AH, although UP designates it as a ET44AH-T4C.
