A bit of a photo line formed here at Speer, getting shots of UP 4014 and train as they make a reverse move back along the southeast leg of the wye at Speer Jct. The train will cross over to Main 3, and continue a reverse move all the way to the yard at Cheyenne.

Speer Jct is effectively a very large wye, with a single track on the southwest and southeast sides of the wye, and two tracks on the north edge. The wye and tracks can leads west toward Laramie, north toward Cheyenne, or south toward Denver. Here, the Big Boy makes a reverse move on the southeast leg of the wye, and will cross over to Main 3 for the ten mile reverse journey to Cheyenne.

After nearly a month on the road, UP 4014 and the steam crew are nearing the end of the first half of their semiquincentennial journey. The train is backing up on Main 3, and will back into the yard to drop their covered hopper off, before heading to the roundhouse.

Here at CP W511, the Laramie Sub (Overland Route) passes underneath BNSF's Front Range Sub. There was a northbound BNSF manifest in the area, for a chance for a "over/under" shot was in the cards. Alas, the northbound stopped to walk the train after it sparked a few fires along the right-of-way south of Cheyenne. UP 4014 backs away from the camera, headed for home at the end of this western tour. In one month and one day, the Big Boy will be departed Cheyenne east for a massive journey that includes a trip on Norfolk Southern to Philadelphia.
