With its station stop at Denver complete, the Zephyr starts to pull away from the station in Lower Downtown Denver (LoDo) on Track 4. The tracks to the left of the train are RTD commuter rail tracks out to Denver International Airport (the A-Line) and the north line (the N-Line). The tracks to the right are RTD commuter rail tracks out to Arvada and Westminster (the B-Line and G-Line).

The westbound Zephyr is currently stopped on Track 4 at Union Station, making its morning stop. It is just waiting on a signal from the RTD dispatcher in order to depart and head west.

The Zephyr picked up quite a few bug impacts on the journey across the plains and in to Denver. So, engineer Gary gets a little creative and uses a water bottle with some soap mixed in to attempt to clean off the windshield a bit.

A 10 hour later Westbound Zephyr sits on Track 4 at Denver Union Station, waiting for passenger to finish boarding and all the bags to be loaded to the train can depart west, hopefully making up a little time.

From the end of Track 4, we look back toward the class "Union Station" sign. The sign itself is somewhat distorted from the head radiating off of AMTK 123.

Considering that it is a quarter to 6 o'clock in the afternoon, you might think that this the eastbound California Zephyr sitting on Track 4 at Denver Union Station. In fact, this is a very late westbound Zephyr! The train is just over 10 hours late due to a BNSF derailment in Illinois.

This shot feels like it may have been taken somewhere back east. At some cold station in New York or Pennsylvania. In the 1980s. But no, this is indeed a picture from Denver Union Station in 2017. An Amtrak F40PH, complete with red class lights, sits on Track 5, ready for the start of the Winter Park Express (Ski Train).

It has been a long time since you could regularly find an F40PH on the tracks behind Union Station. But, at least for this winter season, you will be able to find one here regularly! AMTK 406 is being used, as you can see, on the Winter Park Express this year. The new Ski Train! The first Ski Train of any type in eight years.

In order to accommodate everyone's skies for the tip to Winter Park, Amtrak got a lot of these ski racks and put them in the baggage portion of the Coach/Baggage cars used on the train. That will allow for quick loading in Denver and unloading on the new platform in Winter Park. And vice versa in the afternoons!

Incredible how quickly things can change. While Union Station (the building) hasn't changed, the surrounding buildings and the tracks behind it in "train hall" have changed immensely in the last ten years! With six tracks (1-3 and 6-8) devoted to commuter rail, two tracks (4 and 5) are reserved for non-commuter trains such as Amtrak and, as you see here, the new Ski Train.

Looking for a quick way to get to the slopes in Winter Park, CO? Consider taking the re-invented Ski Train, known as the Winter Park Express. Amtrak will run the train from Denver to Winter Park and back on Saturdays and Sundays from January 7, 2017 through March 26, 2017. The train departs Denver at 7am.

Each Amtrak Superliner can have a four digit car number assigned to it. For the Winter Park Express, Amtrak has simply numbered the cars 0001 to 0007. Here, car 5 sits with icicles forming on the exterior shell.

A pair of Amtrak Coach/Baggage Superliners sit on Track 5 at Union Station, ready to take passengers from Denver to Winter Park for a day of skiing on the slopes. Winter tends to be Amtrak's slow season, so they could afford to steal a few Superliners from long distance trains to make up the 7-car consist of the Winter Park Express.
