A loaded BNSF coal train heads east (geographically south) on Main 3 through Reno Jct on clear signals. Meanwhile, another BNSF coal train slowly creeps underneath the West Black Thunder Mine tipple. A third BNSF coal train waits for a recrew north of the tipple in the distance, and a UP empty head west on Main 2.

Reno Jct is a fantastic place to spend a few hours as a railfan. You have signals in both directions from the Co-450 road overpass to help let you know when trains are lined through, and can see for nearly a mile to the south and about four miles to the north. It is not uncommon for trains to meet through here, such as in this shot. A UP empty on Main 2 meets a BNSF empty on Main 1.

The five staging tracks at Antelope Mine are currently all filled up with trains. Three trains are empty and waiting to be loaded. One train has already loaded and is waiting for a crew to take it east. One line of cars - the second from the right - is a string of empty hoppers currently being stored as there is no demand for them right now. UP has a small yard at Bill, WY, about 45 miles north of the south end of the Powder River Basin. This is a crew change point for many UP trains on the way to or from the mine. A single UP empty awaits a recrew this morning, ready to head west to the mines.

The Orin Subdivision is 127 miles long and has 11 coal loadouts over that stretch. It is extremely rare to find a non-coal train running in the Powder River Basin, but such was the case on this lucky evening as an eastbound (geographic southbound) BNSF train came through carrying Vestas windmill nacelles.

The Powder River Basin (Orin Subdivision) has a stretch of four main tracks over a roughly 20 mile stretch of track going over Logan Hill. With the recent downturn in the demand for coal, traffic in the Powder River Basin has dropped. In addition, there is less of a need for hoppers to haul coal. To kill two birds with one stone, UP and BNSF have stored over a dozen completely train sets of open hoppers on Main 4 in the Powder River Basin. You can see several of those train sets here. Mains 1 through 3 are clear and available for running trains.

One of the earliest ES44AC "GEVO" units on BNSF's roster brings up the tail end of an eastbound coal load on Main 2 as afternoon thunderstorms build to the west. The train has about 30 minutes left to go before exiting the south end of the Powder River Basin.
