Much to my surprise, UP 1996 has been hanging around Denver for over a week. The train has made a round trip between Denver and Cheyenne. The day before, UP 1996 was assigned to a work train that ran on the Moffat and laid ballast around Big Ten Curve. The ballast train returned to Denver, and UP 1996 (and two other units) were removed from the train, left here on Yard Track 1.

The City of Arvada has built a new road, 92nd Lane, connecting CO-93 and CO-72 through a new area southeast of the actual intersection of the highways. As you can see, the grade crossing itself of 92nd Lane has not yet been built.

A lot of construction has happened southeast of the CO-93/CO-72 intersection. The Rocky Flats Industrial Lead passes right through the middle of construction. The construction done to date has dealt with a retaining pond and leveling of the ground. Two new roads have also been built through the area. 92nd Lane has not yet had a grade crossing built across the lead, as seen in this shot, just south of CO-72.

A week before this shot was taken, CO-93 was closed right here for three days so crews could rebuild the grade crossing. This is the Rocky Flat Industrial Lead just up the grade a bit from Rocky.

As you can see, CO-72 is being widened here just east of the CO-93 intersection. The new asphalt has been laid on either siding of the grade crossing. But, as you can also see, the existing grade crossing (stop lights) are going to need to be widened in order to complete the widening.

The West Local has not run on the Rocky Spur in weeks (if not months) at this point. The old stop light that protects the grade crossing on Colorado Highway 72 is going to need to be widened as the highway is being widened to twice its previous width here.

One last shot of a westbound oil train pulling out of the siding at Leyden on a day that I referred to as "Potpourri Sunday", as it offered a little bit of everything over the course of the day.

After meeting the eastbound Canyon Spirit here at Leyden, it is this unit oil trains turn to move. The engineer is throttling up and pulling west out of the siding. The train would only make it as far as Rocky before having to take the siding again, this time for the eastbound Zephyr.

Other than its departure time, the Canyon Spirit does not follow a super tight schedule when moving to its next destination. At times, the train will run a bit slower to offer riders the opportunity to take in the beauty of the passing landscape. As such, it is always hard to say if the train is early, on time, or late! Such is the case this afternoon. It is 4pm and the train is approaching the west switch of Leyden.

A westbound UP oil train departed North Yard shortly after 3pm, but only made it as far as Leyden when DS-378 aligned it into the siding to wait for the eastbound Canyon Spirit. No complaints from me! Leyden is a siding that seems to be very seldomly used these days. Dispatchers generally seem to prefer to use Rocky when given a choice between the two.

Even though I got a shot of it this morning, UP 1996 does not come through town very often, so I figured it was worth getting one more shot of it; I haven't seen it since 2020 prior to this sighting! It will depart this evening as the fourth unit on the MNYCY. When it comes to heritage units, none of them actually come to Denver particularly often anymore...

Power for UP's MNYCY (Manifest, North Yard, CO to Cheyenne Yard, WY) is all lined up with four units elephant-style. The fourth being UP 1996, the Espee Heritage Unit. There is a string of SD70Ms also coupled behind UP 1996, but they will definitely all be deadheading to Cheyenne when the train departs later tonight.

Swinging back by North Yard for the second time today, I found UP 1344 sitting, likely waiting for some light repairs. UP has laid off the vast majority of the folks capable of doing major repairs on engines in Denver. Anything too major will result in the unit being moved to North Platte, NE and Bailey Yard.

Something else worth mentioning is that this unit is very used to being in North Yard! It was originally delivered to Rio Grande as DRGW 3121 in September 1974! You can still clearly see where the MARS light once existed on the nose of the unit.

The paint on UP 4015 here is one year and three days old! Noticed this lettering at the back of the long hood which indicates the unit was painted at North Little Rock on April 8, 2025.

UP 4015 is the SD70M that is frequently assigned the duty of traveling with UP 4014, the Big Boy. However, this is not that same SD70M. When Union Pacific chose an SD70M to repaint as UP 1616 (the Abraham Lincoln unit), they chose to repaint UP 4015. About a year ago, UP decided to renumber UP 4392 as a "new" UP 4015. It received a fresh paint of coat in UP's newest scheme to go along with its new number.

On this Sunday morning, it was sitting amongst a string of half dozen SD70Ms, all waiting to head to Cheyenne. The other SD70Ms are likely headed for long term storage. UP 4015 is probably just headed back to the roundhouse in Cheyenne to serve with UP 4014 again in the future. I always appreciate how good units look in fresh paint!
