The California Zephyr has, of course, changed much over the course of fifty years! In the last ten years though, it is very common for the Zephyr to have eight Superliners: three sleepers, three coaches, a diner and a lounge car. One of the cars - either a sleeper or a coach - was missing on this particular day.

Just wanted to say how much I enjoy your avocation. You take great shots and I have to confess I usually don't see them full sized like I'm seeing this one right now. Way better! I also appreciate the annotations. Where you picked up all the train knowledge would make a good story. I'm mostly a steam buff, but have been a basic train nut most of my life. Every time I drive by the coal trains crossing Santa Fe Drive, I have to tab the window down to hear those lovely engines work away. You know, you ought to consider allowing paying riders once in a while. Or maybe do a slide show somewhere.
