A few miles east of Hanna, WY and the UP 844 is shooting out a bit of black smoke. The diesel on the train is UP 7813. It is an ES44AC delivered to UP a little over a year earlier. It's dynamic brakes are used when proceeding down a grade so the train doesn't have to rely entirely on air brakes. It also serves as a back up (for power) in the event the UP 844 become unable to continue on.

That's a fantastic point Tim. Makes a lot of sense. I'm sure you are correct. In fact, thinking back to Saturday, I'm pretty sure I heard UP 7813 in dynamics a couple of times!

I think if you check with the Steam team in Cheyenne that they will tell you that the diesel is there more for its dynamic brakes than as back-up power.
