Like many eastern Amtrak routes, the Silver Star does not use any Superliners. Instead, there is a mix of equipment as seen in this picture heading south out of Jacksonville.

Part of Amtrak's problems are the east coast tunnels. Superliners will not fit through the tunnels. As a result, Amtrak has to use cigar-tube, heritage and Amfleet coaches. Single level means less revenue per car, and when you figure in maintenance, etc., it eats away at the profit margin.

If the east coast could notch the tunnels, Amtrak would be making a killing out there by increasing passengers, decreasing cars, train length, maintenance and union wage car attendants.
