While the line itself technically isn't abandoned, the CTC system absolutely is. A look inside the signal cabinet at west Tennessee Pass reveals cut wires and broken glass everywhere. If Tennessee Pass ever were to become active again with CTC, a completely new CTC system would have to be installed.

Robert, short of a Congressional requirement ("the law"), I can't imagine a situation when PTC would ever need to be required on Tennessee Pass. But then again, I'm not an expert...

Would PTC ever be needed on this line?  
 
What are the dates on the relays?  
Sad that vandals break everything.  
If copper, those wires would likely all be stolen for scrap.

Considering that Positive Train Control is coming, it's likely the entire box would be gutted or replaced to make room for the new system. That is, if UP ever finds itself interested in re-opening the route.
