It is rather amazing to me that GP15-1s like this unit have survived on UPs roster longer than their bigger brother tunnel motors like the SD40T-2 and SD45T-2. This particular GP15-1 rolled off the EMD floor in July 1977 as Missouri Pacific 1603. After the UP/MP merger, it spent a number of years as UP 1603, before finally being renumbered to UPY 603. If you look closely, you can even note where the "1" to the left of the "6" was painted over.
