A couple decades ago, UP had so many units on the roster that they were in danger of running out of 4-digit numbers. Thus, they came up with a new reporting mark: UPY. It stands for "Union Pacific Yard Units". One example is this GP15-1, numbered UPY 618. It was originally a Missouri Pacific unit, delivered in September 1979.
