This is quite an incredible catch that I lucked into the day before Thanksgiving. This was the very last F40PH (actually, an F40PHR) delivered to Amtrak by EMD. The units were numbered 200 to 409, and were the backbone of the long distance trains on Amtrak through the 1980s and most of the 1990s. As you can see, AMTK 409 is sporting Amtrak's Phase 4 paint scheme. After being retired by Amtrak in 2001, the unit spent years in storage in Bear, DE before being sold to BUGX in private ownership and moved to Anaheim, CA. Here, it is on its way to Middletown, IA, possibly for cosmetic restoration.
