South Morrill developed as a C&NW-operated crew-change and locomotive-servicing terminal for the joint C&NW–Union Pacific Powder River Basin coal route, inaugurated in 1984. Following UP’s acquisition of C&NW in 1995, the terminal became part of an integrated Union Pacific coal corridor and was subsequently expanded. Here, a westbound empty is on Main 1, ready to head for a mine in the Powder River Basin.
