Sunday, August 26, 2007 - As advertised, the Colorado State Fair Special - led by UP 844 and UP 1989 (Search Photo Gallery) - made its round trip between Denver and Pueblo today. The train departed Union Station promptly at 8am this morning.
The train made fantastic time south. Dispatchers from UP and BNSF were instructed to give the special top priority. There had been some speculation that the special might run on Main 2 south to avoid coal load on Main 1. As it turns out, there weren't any trains on Main 1, so the special had a clear track.
It made it to the Pueblo Depot slightly ahead of schedule and got all the passengers off in a timely fashion. I watched for awhile as the train worked to get itself out of the way for the day to allow freight operations to continue normally.
I didn't stick around until the 6pm departure back north, but tried to find some traffic to chase north back to Denver. All-in-all, I came away with 23 total pictures from the day. Hope you enjoy them!
