Tuesday, November 27, 2007 - The Rocky Mountain News revealed in a story on November 20th that neither the heavy rail, nor the light rail tracks will wind up underground at Union Station.
With the Union Station Redevelopment Project, the original plan was to bury both the light rail tracks (as a part of the first phase of the project) as well as the commuter/station tracks (a second phase of the project). Apparently the FRA has stepped in though and told RTD that it will not allow trains to run down a hill into an underground station as originally intended. So, shots of Amtrak and the Ski Train at ground-level at the station don't appear to be in danger after all!
