Tuesday, May 13, 2008 - Over the past several years, Amtrak's California Zephyr has made a detour between Denver and Salt Lake City for a few weeks in the summer. Instead of running on the former Grande, it heads north along the route of the San Francisco Zephyr, running along the Overland Route from Denver to Cheyenne to Salt Lake.
This year is no exception, so take note of the following dates if you are planning on taking a trip on the Zephyr, or if you are planning on looking for trains along the Moffat. Reroute dates:
Friday, May 23rd through Friday, May 30th **
Sunday, June 8th through Sunday, June 15th **
Amtrak will provide bus service for passengers from Denver to Glenwood Springs as well as Grand Junction. No bus service will be provided for Fraser, Granby, Green River, Helper or Provo.
Amtrak #5 will arrive in Denver as scheduled, but will depart north on the UP's Greeley Subdivision toward Wyoming. Likewise, Amtrak #6 will arrive in Denver from the north.
This year, I have heard that UP is replacing 13 or 14 miles worth of rail in the Yarmony / Bond area. Work windows will last from 7am to 5pm. Consequently, don't expect a lot of traffic of any type along the Moffat on the those dates.

** Note that these are the dates that Amtrak departs from (or arrives in) Denver. Meaning if you are coming from Chicago or Emeryville, the trains departing on May 22nd through May 29th or June 7th through June 14th are the trains that will be detoured.
