Following not too far behind the eastbound Zephyr, this coal empty is moving at track speed, as you can deduce from the slight blur of the lead engine! A few people are enjoying a quite June evening in a boat on Barr Lake in the distance.

For much of the year, the eastbound Zephyr departs Denver after dark. However, in the summer months, there is still a bit of light when it heads east. Here, just days before the official start of summer, the Chicago-bound train is right on time as it passes by Barr Lake, about 18 miles east of Denver Union Station.

The colder temperatures of November (about 40°F on this day) help to bring out the steam in the steam engine as UP 4014 heads west on the Limon Sub just east of the town of Bennett.

Anytime UP runs a steam train, they include at least one diesel unit. It is used as an assist in the event the steam engine needs it, but more commonly is used to help with (dynamic) braking and slowing the train down.

UP 4014 offers up a fair amount of smoke and steam as it crosses Kiowa Creek. The Big Boy is using two "water bottles" to provide its water. The two yellow cars directly behind UP 4014 are both filled with water for use by UP 4014 on the trip.

Union Pacific's fully restored "Big Boy", UP 4014, leads a train across Kiowa Creek just east of Bennett. UP 4014 left Cheyenne two months ago for a long tour around the system and is heading back toward Denver. It will layover for the night before returning to Cheyenne the next day.

An eastbound crosses over a culvert underneath some partly cloudy skies. Despite the (relatively) clear skies, it was actually a very chilly day.

While chasing this UP special east on the Limon Sub, I came across a couple other Denver-area railfans. Here is one gaining a little altitude while shooting the special on the approach to Manilla Road.

This UP special ran over the Moffat. The train was called in Grand Junction at 10:30pm the night before and actually made amazing time. Was hoping to get a few shots of the train on the Moffat, but it was in Denver by 7:00am and had a new crew called at 8:15am.
