While there is no train in the shot, I thought I'd include this shot of Gross Reservoir to show the progress being made on the raising of the reservoir. The height of the dam is increasing by 131 feet, which will increase the capacity roughly three times over! The project still has a couple years remaining.

An eastbound UP coal load...pretty rare on the Moffat in 2024...is just starting its journey east through the Tunnel District. About two cars of the train are in the shortest tunnel in the district, Tunnel 29 (78 feet). Note South Boulder Creek to the right, which will quickly decrease in elevation. Faster than the tracks, to be sure.

A pair of AC4400CWs lead an eastbound coal load across the bridge over South Boulder Creek just west of Tunnel 29. The train just departed Cliff on a green signal and will have greens the rest of the way in to Denver. In the distance, there is still a lot of snow covering the Continental Divide.

UP's MGJNY passes through Tunnel 7 toward the east end of the Tunnel District. The manifest has six units on the head end and a single DPU on the end, with sixty cars in between.

The westbound California Zephyr passes through a true winter scene, with evergreens white instead of green, in between Tunnels 7 and 8 in the Tunnel District of the Moffat Tunnel Sub. Since Tunnel 1, the train has been running (roughly) geographically north, but after emerging from Tunnel 8, the train will be headed geographically west, following along South Boulder Canyon near Elderado Springs.

An ES44AC and two SD70ACes bring up the tail end of a westbound coal empty at Crescent. Due to the thick fog and crazy winter weather (near the end of April), the train will quickly disappear in to the mist as it continues its journey west.

This westbound coal empty consists of bathtub gondolas with rotary couplers. All of the gons are either BNSF or BN. What is particularly interesting is that the symbol for the train suggests that it is in fact a UP train. Despite having all BNSF power and BN/BNSF gondolas...

Ten days until May! Really mother nature!? Colorado loves drawing out winter as long as it possibly can, as you can seen here. A BNSF coal empty heads west through thick fog on the main at Crescent. Despite being a month in to spring, there is a few inches of snow on the ground and it is only 30°F (-1°C) outside.

The eastbound Zephyr knocks down a clear signal at the west switch of Crescent as afternoon storms build to the southwest over the plains. There is a break here in the Tunnel District as Tunnel 19 is just out of sight to the west and Tunnel 18 is east of Crescent, which is a 5,550 foot long siding.

Just west of the grade crossing at Crescent, the Zephyr is wrapping around the near-180° curve toward the west switch. With as few trains as there are running on the Moffat these days, it's likely been many days or even weeks since the siding here at Crescent was last used.

The westbound Zephyr is right on time as it leaves Crescent behind and gets ready to duck in to Tunnel 19. One of the more well-known landmarks that passengers on the Zephyr watch for is Gross Reservoir. The dam is one of the primary water supplies for Denver and currently holds roughly 14 billion gallons of water. As Denver is growing though, there is a project to also raise Gross Reservoir another 131 feet by 2025. This will nearly triple the amount of water in Gross Reservoir, adding 25 billion gallons of capacity, allowing a total of roughly 39 billion gallons of water to be stored.

The westbound Zephyr is between Tunnel 7 and Tunnel 8 in the heart of the Tunnel District on a beautiful May morning. The train is about to disappear in Tunnel 8 and, after emerging, the plains will no longer be visible. Tunnels 1-7 are along the eastern slope of the Front Range of the Rockies, but Tunnel 8 curves the tracks around the northeast face of Elderado Mountain, into the Rockies for the journey west.

UP 1943 leads a UP Officer's Special train west at the west switch of Cliff along South Boulder Creek. The train was given top priority and ran from Denver to Grand Junction. It was apparently a marketing and sales meeting that included some UP customers. It was also rumored that UP CEO Lance Fritz himself was on the train.
