East meets west! A eastbound coal load (headed geographically south) meets a westbound coal empty (headed geographically north) just north of Bill. The empty has a clear intermediate signal on Main 3 in the distance.

The interlocking of Reno Junction is a long one. In fact, the distance between the eastern-most signals and the western-most signals is roughly 1.8 miles! Here, a coal load is pulling up the grade on Main 1 toward a clear signal at the east (geographically south) end of the Reno Junction interlocking. The tracks to the right of the train are Main 2 and Main 3, respectively. The track to the left is the Black Thunder Mine Lead.

A lot of traffic runs through Reno Junction! In addition to the triple track mainline, two tracks branch off from the track to the east (geographically south) and one to the west (geographically north). These tracks all lead to the Black Thunder and Black Thunder East mine loadouts. This particular load is coming from Black Thunder East.

An eastbound coal load is just departing the Black Thunder East mine. There are four Black Thunder mines in the Powder River Basin: Black Thunder West, Black Thunder, Black Thunder East, and South Black Thunder. The massive structure in the background is the loadout for Black Thunder West. In the distance, you can see a pair of trains waiting to load.

A pair of SD70s (one an SD70MAC and one an SD70ACe) push as end DPUs on this south (timetable east) coal load. The train is on Main 3 and this is the view from the Lawver Road overpass.

Always good to catch an unfamiliar face when out chasing! A Kansas City Southern SD70ACe (in the Retro-Belle paint scheme) is on lease to BNSF. Together with an AC4400CW, they are pulling a loaded coal train south (timetable east) on Main 3.

This coal train loaded at one of the northern mines in the Powder River Basin and is now making its way south (timetable east). It is currently running on Main 3 and has roughly 100 miles left before leaving the Powder River Basin (called the Orin Subdivision) behind.

An eastbound coal empty glides downhill on Main 1 near milepost 30. A single ES44AC brings up the rear. South of the northern-most mine and north of the southern-most mine, it is possible to see coal loads meeting each other and coal empties meeting each other as trains make their way to or from their respective mines.

Eastbounds have a pretty decent grade climbing up from the entrance to the Coal Creek Mine. This empty is pulling up the hill on Main 1 through the crossovers at West Coal Creek. The Powder River Basin stretches roughly 117 miles and serves 11 mines. The entire line has at least three main tracks, and there is a 20 mile stretch of four main tracks!

A BNSF coal empty makes its way south (timetable east) on Main 1 in the Powder River Basin. If you look at the signal bridge in the distance, you'll note that a westbound has a clear signal.

A empty ballast train (with a uniform consist of "Herzog" ballast cars) heads west (geographic north) through the Powder River Basin on Main 2. DC units are pretty rare in the PRB these days, but the specific units on this train made this a really cool catch.

I felt pretty lucky to catch this westbound (geographic northbound) with my dad. Not only is this a non-coal train on the Orin Sub, but it is being led by a Warbonnet SD75M and a Norfolk Southern C44-9W!

About a half mile away from the tracks at Crossover 49.2 there stands a "distant" signal (note the "D" plate). The lead to the South Black Thunder Mine is unsignaled, which is exactly why this distant signal exists. Distant signals are used to inform train crews in unsignaled territory that they are approaching a signal. While the signal does not give in occupancy information (it will remain yellow after the train passes), the yellow signals tells the crew they have a red at the entrance to the Main. If the crew had a more favorable signal at the main, the distant signal would have been more favorable as well. Distant signals do not typically display a red as they do not grant authority for a movement. They are for information purposes only.

The lead to the South Black Thunder Mine crosses through a pipe tunnel so the tracks can pass underneath Mackey Road. Here, a BNSF coal load is headed for the mainline at Crossover 49.2.
