Three trains are empty and waiting to be loaded. One train has already loaded and is waiting for a crew to take it east. One line of cars - the second from the right - is a string of empty hoppers currently being stored as there is no demand for them right now. The train will leave the Powder River Basin about 40 miles ahead, entering BNSF's Canyon Sub so it can continue to its destination. It is extremely rare to find a non-coal train running in the Powder River Basin, but such was the case on this lucky evening as an eastbound (geographic southbound) BNSF train came through carrying Vestas windmill nacelles. The eastbound train is carrying Vestas nacelles, the power plant used on windmills. Note the faint rainbow visible in the distance. With the recent downturn in the demand for coal, traffic in the Powder River Basin has dropped. In addition, there is less of a need for hoppers to haul coal. To kill two birds with one stone, UP and BNSF have stored over a dozen complete train sets of open hoppers on Main 4 in the Powder River Basin. You can see several of those train sets here. That is because it is entering Restricted Limits on the south end of the Casper Sub. The train has a track warrant from the Casper Sub Dispatcher and will continue north toward Laurel, MT.
