UP 4014 is getting ready to embark on a two month journey that will take it to Philadelphia for the 4th of July (the semiquincentennial of the United States). Here, the Big Boy is backing out of the roundhouse toward a freight consist that will be included on the train for (air) braking purposes.

Swan Ranch is a logistics hub that started operations in 2011 southwest of Cheyenne. It started with around 3 miles of track, and has now expanded to nearly 21 miles of track, with multiple industries moving in. The park interchanges with both Union Pacific and BNSF. Swan Ranch Railroad handles the switching, and has five units on the roster. Two of them are positioned here, ready to start switching.

The California Zephyr is going through the motions of making the stop that requires the most work on the journey. The reverse move into Union Station. The train pulled beyond the signal at Prospect Jct and is now backing over the South Platte river toward the Buck Lead.

One of the few-remaining Pacific-series passenger cars, built by the the Budd Company in 1950 for Union Pacific, the car transferred to Amtrak when Amtrak formed in 1971. After serving in various roles for Amtrak, it is now used by Amtrak for special trains, inspection trips, display trains, and employee support movements. Today, it is catching a ride on the back of the California Zephyr.

Denver's rail intermodal scene is pretty small compared to markets like LA or Chicago. Rennicks Yard represents BNSF's entire intermodal presence in Denver. Granted, it is not an insignificant yard, seen here form the north end. A lot of JB Hunt (and other) trailers flow through here on a weekly basis.

UP 3047 is one of roughly 200 SD70ACe-T4s that Union Pacific has on its roster. For the past decade, the EPA has mandated extremely strict emissions standards (known as "Tier-4" standards) for diesel-electric locomotives. Both Union Pacific and GE have locomotives that meet the requirements, but neither has experienced great success with sales in the United States. These units are more expensive up front, more expensive to maintain, and tend to be less reliable due to their complexity. Consequently, while a handful are in service, most railroads have instead created their own in-house rebuild program for older locomotives that are exempt, rather than spend extra money on purchases.

A pair of GP38-2s are currently switching cars on the ladder in North Yard. The units are nose-to-nose, which is fine as visibility is not an issue. The units are being remotely controlled by a yard working on the ground, pulling pins and throwing switches.

I was a bit surprised to find this old "triclops" SD60M sitting on the ready track in North Yard. I had heard that UP is slowly clearing out a lot of the units that have been stored in Grand Junction, which is likely where this relic of the 1980s and 1990s came from. Not sure if it is going to head for storage, a rebuild, sale, or the scrapper. Considering a chunk of the long hood behind the dynamic brake fan is missing at the top, I'm guessing the disposition might not be great!

A BNSF switch job, with a still-yellow-and-blue GP39-2, waits patiently at a red signal at Utah Jct. BNSF's tracks cross UP's Belt Lead at Utah Junction, and the diamond is controlled by Union Pacific DS-378. So, the BNSF crew is at the mercy of UP's dispatcher to allow them to cross the diamond to continue their switching.
