You can seen the line of cars on CO-40 in the background, stretching just about as far as the eye can see, filled with people coming out to see the Big Boy in person. With the downturn in coal, things have really slowed down on the KP. As few as 1 or 2 trains per 24-hour period is not uncommon! The train departed Mesa around 5:45am. I got trackside just east of Deer Trail, the first spot where sunlight came out from behind morning clouds. Here, UP 1983 leads the train in the morning sun.
