The UP Steam Crew bring UP 4014 to a stop for a 30 minute break and photo op in the small town of Hugo, CO. UP 4014 is getting close to the end of a month-long tour that took it from Cheyenne to New Orleans and now back.

No matter where it goes, how large or small the town is, or how far away from major population centers, UP's steam engines always draw an impressive crowd! The town of Hugo is flooded with steam enthusiasts. So much so that local police were conducting traffic control at intersection is the typically sleepy town. The train is stopped here for a 30 minute photo op.

Unsure of exactly where Big Boy UP 4014 would stop, people walk along the tracks from the left to gather around the engine to marvel at the impressive machine, take pictures, or maybe get that selfie they've wanted!

This aerial view of the small town of Hugo, CO really exemplifies just how much of a crowd UP's steam trains draw in! Cars are lined on both sides of US-287 through the town. I saw plenty of license plates from Kansas and Utah as railfans and steam fans (who are not necessarily railfans otherwise) made the trek to check it out.

Just east of Cedar Point, UP 4014 and UP 4015 lead UP's annual steam train excursion on the seldom-used Limon Sub, parallel to I-70.

UP 4014 climbs the slight grade at Cedar Point, just west of Limon. Cedar Point is a great place to check out trains on the Limon Sub. Light is usually decent for westbounds or eastbounds, and the grade means trains are working a bit more as well.

This particular scene just has a timeless feel for it. If it wasn't for the SD70M...and perhaps the radio tower in the distance...it would be somewhat difficult to tell if this picture was taken in 1955 or 2021.

On July 23, 2013, it was revealed that UP had reached an agreement with the SoCal Chapter of the Railway & Locomotive Historical Society in Pomona, CA to reacquire Big Boy 4014, rebuild it, and bring it back in to service. It is great being able to stand trackside and actually see the largest steam engine in American history running on the rails.

Have you ever noted the numbers on the side of the cab of UP 4014 (beneath the unit number), or on most US steam engines for that matter? If you have wondered what they mean, here you go!
4-8-8-4: The wheel arrangement of the engine
1: This unit was part of the first or of this model of steam engine
68: The diameter of the drive wheels (in inches)
24-24: Diameter of the drive cylinders in inches (first number is front cylinders, second is back)
32: Length of the stroke (in inches) of the drive cylinders
540: Weight of the unit in pounds

A smattering of railfans journeyed a bit off the main thoroughfares to Cedar Point for UP's steam train. There is a bit of a grade here, and the tracks depart the path they generally follow along I-70. Yours truly is amongst the group of photographers in the foreground.

UP 4014 makes a 15 minute stop in the small town of Deer Trail, CO, about 50 miles east of Denver on the Colorado Plains. You can seen the line of cars on CO-40 in the background, stretching just about as far as the eye can see, filled with people coming out to see the Big Boy in person.

UP 4014 and train cross over a fairly long, albeit not particularly high, bridge over Kiowa Creek. Being that it is September, the creek is probably little more than a stream, probably only a few feet across (if that). However, the train still looks great as it crosses the trestle amongst the trees!

Just west of the town of Watkins, there is a great curve that has good lighting for eastbounds in the mornings and westbound in the afternoons. It worked out quite nicely that UP 4014 was making its way west at the curve in the late afternoon! Kinda nice how the curve almost entirely obscures UP 4015, the SD70M helper, in the train.

UP 4014 and UP 4015 head up UP's 2021 steam excursion train west of Watkins, CO. In the distance, on the left side of the shot, there is a control tower. This is for Colorado Air and Space Port (KCFO), a small airport only a few miles away from Denver International Airport.

Holy construction! For 50 years, I-70 has crossed through the east part of Denver on a bridge known as the "elevated deck". With that bridge aging, it was apparent it would need to be replaced. The Colorado Department of Transportation instead decided to drop I-70 in to a trench and knock down the elevated deck. A small piece of the elevated deck that hasn't been torn down is still visit to the right of the Purina factory. Meanwhile, UP 4014 stops across I-70 on new tracks and a new bridge at the north end of 36th Street Yard, waiting to back in.
