A lattice structure of beams construct the framework that, among other things, supports a large crane that can roll on rails along the top of the framework. All things are silent here at Burnham now, just month away from being wiped from the landscape.

A look at Track 22 on the north side of Building #1 at Burnham. In a matter of months, this building (along with everything but two tracks) at Burnham will be gone.

Until recently, with the closing of Burnham, you could find a transfer table here in this pit. If you are unfamiliar with a transfer table, it is similar to a turn table. But instead of rotating, it moving vertically back and forth to allow cars and engines to be put in different stalls in the buildings.

A fair number of Rio Grande cabooses have actually survived well past the end of the caboose era and the end of Rio Grande. One such example is caboose 01447, which is seen here in Burnham Yard in pristine condition.

Classic Rio Grande crane #027 as seen sitting on a track on the west edge of Burnham. The crane, once used to assist in the cleanup of derailments or any heavy maintenance, will soon be finding a new home with the closing of Burnham four months earlier.

One of my personal favorite models of engines of all time! EMD (Electro-Motive Division, at that time) had a very unique look to it. It was, in my opinion, a very classy look. Nice to know that a couple Rio Grande GP30s will be preserved. DRGW 3011 is at the Colorado Railroad Museum, awaiting funds for restoration. DRGW 3006 is owned by a private individual who, as far as I know, also intends to restore the classic unit, which will soon celebrate 55th birthday.

A side view of Rio Grande GP30 #3006. This unit is now owned by Daniel Quait, who intends to preserve the engine. It has been stored in Burnham for nearly 20 years, when it was retired from active service. From here, it will be need to be moved to a new home as the tracks at Burnham are being ripped out.

A 3/4 roster shot of Rio Grande GP30 #3006 as seen from the back end. This GP30 was actually still be used on locals into the late 1990s. That's why you will find a pair of ditch lights on the back end of 3006.

Burnham Shops in Denver was shut down by Union Pacific on Valentine's Day, 2016. By the start of June, crews were well on their way to ripping out track. Equipment owned by Daniel Quait, including Rio Grande GP30 #3006, still sit on one of the yard tracks on the west side.

With it switching nearly completed, the MNYNP sits just past the signal at Broadway on the Belt Industrial Lead. The engineer will wait here for a van to bring the conductor up to the headend. Upon his arrival and a final air test, the train will head east on the Belt Industrial Lead and then turn north on UP's Greeley Sub.

Yard Shots BNSF
A pair of BNSF SD40-2s get ready to do some switching at the industries near Utah Junction. One of the industries served by BNSF here is Altogether Recycling. They fill up multiple carloads of material on a weekly basis. All of the track seen here was once narrow gauge and, later, "three rail" (both narrow and standard gauge). There are a few places where the narrow gauge rail can still be found in between the standard gauge rails.

Today's MNYNP will have an all-EMD consist, including a pair of Norfolk Southern units being borrowed by UP. The unit featured in this shot is an SD70M-2. Even though EMD released them at the start of 2005, I've seen fewer than a dozen in the last 11 years. Neither UP nor BNSF bought any, so they don't show up in Colorado too often.

UP's MNYNP is shuffling some cars around in North Yard before it can head north toward Cheyenne. In order to have enough room to switch cars around over a few tracks, it actually enters the Belt Industrial Lead. My favorite type of engine since the GP60 will be leading the train - an SD70M with flared radiators.

Two of three SLRG SD90s on the MNYNP can be see here as the train slowly passes through Broadway on the Belt Line. The lease on the units is up and they are now headed back to CIT Leasing. These beasts have been interesting to witness over the last 18 years.

The SD90 seems akin to the DDA40X in some regards. Both were intended to be high horsepower units and neither was successful over the long term. UP had shed its roster of SD9043MACs. With the lease from CIT Leasing up, the San Luis and Rio Grande is also doing the same. Three SD9043MACs are on UP's MNYNP, headed for North Platte, NE.
