After making a crew change in Lincoln, NE, the westbound Zephyr makes four station stops before reaching Denver. The final of the four stops is the small town of Fort Morgan, CO, located about 80 miles east of Denver. The town has a population of roughly 11,500 people, and the station stop is generally completed in two minutes or less. Here, in the early morning sun, the 90 minute late Zephyr tries to expedite the stop.

Three private cars, each with a different heritage and wearing a different paint scheme, catch a ride on the tail end of the westbound Zephyr as the train makes its scheduled station stop at Fort Morgan.

The westbound Zephyr passes by various industries in the small town of Fort Morgan on the eastern Colorado plains. For a good portion of the year, the Zephyr rolls through here in the dark. In the summer months, however, the train typically arrives just after the crack of dawn.

Here is a shot that is only possible once or twice a year, if that often. This is the eastbound California Zephyr heading into Fort Morgan right around noon. Typically, the Zephyr hits this stretch of track between 9 and 10 o'clock at night, so catching it in daylight is very rare.

Just a few miles west of Fort Morgan, the daily Z-Train from Denver to Chicago is approaching the siding of Bijou on a yellow signal. An SD40-2 and a GP60M are the power for the 42-car, 4166-foot-long train.

What was comes face-to-face with what could have been. A "green and cream" SD70MAC on the left stares at the one and only "vomit-bonnet" in the siding at Bijou.

When Burlington Northern and Santa Fe first mergered in 1995, they went through a few experimental paint schemes before standardizing on the Heritage II scheme. This was one of the experiments and it is a one-of-a-kind. It is often referred to as the "vomit-bonnet" because many railfans do not care for the "copy-cat" of the famous warbonnet.

Nearing the siding of Bijou (which is actually at Fort Morgan), this 125 car (524 axle) empty is slowing to take the siding for a meet with a westbound.
