When the line over Soldier Summit was being built, engineers had to find a way to gain a lot of altitude in a short distance. The loops at Gilluly were the answer. Here, a westbound coal load has come around a 180 degree curve near the west end of the siding of Gilluly. Note the defunct house track on the right side of the shot.

Snow highlights the mountains in the background as the eastbound Stockton to Denver winds through the loops on Gilluly on main two. The two units seen here are actually two unmanned helpers at the end of the train.

East meets west! A westbound Utah Railway coal load sits stopped on main two (foreground) waiting for an eastbound coal empty on main one. Main two is undergoing maintenance further west, so the Utah coal trainwill wait for the eastbound to pass before crossing over to main one.

Main two (the track to the left in the picture) is undergoing track and time. Thus, this BNSF manifest must run through the center siding at Gilluly to meet an eastbound coming on main one. The unit in the picture is actually the last DPU unit on the train. Note US 6 running across the mountain in the background.

This was the one and only time I personally saw tunnel motors assisting an eastbound manifest up the western slope of Soldier Summit. Soon after the year 2000, DPU came to Utah and the tunnel motors were no longer needed. Here, they push on the back of the MRODV on main two at Gilluly.

DRGW 5360 has some pretty bad scorching under the dynamic brake intakes…I think it adds to the unit personally! Right now, 5360 is helping push the eastbound MRODV up the west slope of Soldier Summit.

SP 5350, once DRGW 5350 prior to being repainted in 1995, assists in the push through the loops at Gilluly.
