The reason was due to an activated slide fence toward the west end of Byers Canyon. In this shot, a few rocks lay alongside the rails. The culprits? I'm not sure... Looks like a white path through the canyon, which this westbound coal empty is following. All the power the train will need once it is loaded is coming along for the ride. It just passed a clear intermediate and is also passing by the detector at mp 79.9. One of these Septembers, I really want to try to get up here in the morning for this same shot. It is a great spot to get a shot of eastbounds in the afternoon, such as this coal load. Westbound here on the other side of the bridge wouldn't be bad, other than a telephone pole with wires running right through the middle of the scene of oncoming trains. It is lucky that US-40 runs through Byers Canyon on the opposite side of the Colorado River from the tracks. Why is it unusual? It is only about 4,000 feet long and has no mid-train DPUs! Instead, it is configured with two units on the point and two unit on the rear. There are multiple slide fences throughout Byers Canyon. These fences protected the tracks from falling rocks. And, if a large rock breaks one of the wires, the dispatcher is notified and signals around the break drop to restricting. It is sometimes easy to forget just how sharp a freshly painted unit looks, especially when you are used to seeing 15-20 years old power, covered in coal, dust, dirt, oil, and grime! Note the interesting antennas on the top of UP 2696. I can only assume that these are somehow related to PTC (Positive Train Control), but I am not certain. The location is known as "Windy Gap", west of Granby. The reason it has taken me so long is because it isn't too often that I'm in this area in the late afternoon when the sun is just right. Getting the shot with fall colors was something I always considered to be "icing on the cake". Then, to throw a UP passenger special with perfect power in the shot and you can't go wrong!
