As the westbound Zephyr rolls along in Byers canyon, we can see the Colorado River at the bottom of the canyon. This is close the start of the Colorado River, which will continue to flow all the way to the Gulf of California. In this shot, note that a fairly significant section of rock face gave way and fell down to the river below. The rocks being much brighter shade of orange, having not been exposed to the elements until relatively recently.

Most of the canyons the tracks of the former Rio Grande run through are only accessible by rail, trail (in some instances), or rafting. However, Byers canyon is a nice exception. With the tracks running on the north side of the canyon, US-40 is paved and runs on the south side of the canyon. Here, the westbound Zephyr makes its way through the canyon with a colorful pair leading the train.

A few miles west of Granby is this spot I've nicknamed the "Granby Overlook". It is a fantastic spot to get shots of westbounds. The later in the day the better as the sun, of course, continues to swing around to the west. Still, not a bad look at a colorful consist on the westbound Zephyr, the Continental Divide standing with minimal snow off in the distance.

The westbound Winter Park Express winds its way through a sea of trees on the single track main, making its way from the Winter Park Ski Resort (Amtrak code: WPR) to Fraser (Amtrak code: WIP). A handful of passengers did not get off the train at Winter Park, and are enjoying the ride the additional six miles to detrain in Fraser.

The westbound Winter Park Express is stopped at the based of the slope of the Winter Park Ski Resort. While snow levels are way lower this winter, there's still enough here at Winter Park for the slopes to be covered and skiers to enjoy a day on the slopes after a great ride up from Denver on the Winter Park Express Ski Train.

The westbound Winter Park Express is slowing to a stop along the heated platform at the base of the slopes at Winter Park. Once stopped, the train will let its passengers off to collect their skies and snowboards. Despite the unseasonably warm winter with below normal snowfall, the Winter Park Express has had a great season.

The final shot of the day for this journey to the western slope of the Moffat comes at a quarter after 4pm, here at the siding of Radium. This Provo-Denver has likely met its final westbound and should have a clear shot the rest of the way to Denver. The crew went on duty at 10:30am, giving them just over six hours to make the trip in to town.

I'm not mechanic, but I have a suspicion that the turbocharger on that third unit is either about to go out, or already has gone out, based on the impressive amount of exhaust it is spitting out as this eastbound manifest throttle up in the siding at Radium, ready to continue east toward Denver.

For the first time ever, I finally made it down to Radium for a shot of a westbound oil empty meeting and eastbound BNSF Provo-Denver. I've never gone all the way to Radium before because it is a little bit out of the way from the main road that connects Kremmling to Bond. It is a 6-8 minute drive in and out of Radium, and typically I bypass it as I do not want to fall behind whatever train I might be chasing. However, with the light rapidly fading, it seemed like the perfect time for a few shots. Well worth it, too, as Radium is quite scenic.

Just east of the east switch of Radium, this westbound UP oil empty emerges from Tunnel 42, the second half of the train visible off in the distance. The train is slowing as it has an approach signal at the east end of Radium as DS-378 is working to figure out the plan for the train.

The Moffat can truly be feast or famine, and more often than not it seems like it is famine. However, such was not the case on this particularly Sunday as there were seven trains running in the Colorado high country! I got shots of all but one (the eastbound Zephyr), with this westbound UP oil train being the final one. The train is just west of Little Gore, on the approach to Radium.

Nearing the west end of Gore Canyon, the first official media run of the newly-rebranded Canyon Spirit makes its way west. Starting in 2026, the train will make a six day journey from Denver to Salt Lake City and back. It will make stops at Glenwood Springs and Moab as well. During the winter months, the power and the passenger cars will be changed to read Canyon Spirit instead of Rocky Mountaineer. There is also a new power car in the consist, which presumably will also be painted this winter.

After meeting a eastbound coal load at Gore, it is the Rocky Mountaineer's turn to make its way through Gore Canyon, coming through Tunnel 36 in this shot. However, this is no longer the Rocky Mountaineer. This is now the Canyon Spirit! Same train, but it is being rebranded and, in 2026, will run from Denver all the way to Salt Lake City and back. This is a test run that includes some members of the media on board. A new power car is on the head end behind the power.
