After descending off of Raton Pass, this westbound BNSF work train heads down the mainline at Raton. While Amtrak passes this location twice a day, this is the first manifest through here in months.

At the depot in Raton, Amtrak 4 - the Southwest Chief - slows for its station stop. The consist is almost identical to the typical consist for the California Zephyr. On this day, the train had an extra car on the end - a California Surfliner car.

The sun is getting very low in the western sky as Amtrak Train #4, the Southwest Chief, approaches its station stop in the town of Raton, NM. Amtrak is just about the only train that uses this track across southeast Colorado and northern New Mexico.
