After receiving a yellow signal at the west end of East Portal, this UP coal empty is about to plunge into the 6.2 mile long tunnel. The train is headed for the Somerset Mine on the North Fork Subdivision in western Colorado.

A UP coal empty crosses over Rollins Pass road. The train has been running on yellow signals following a slow-moving BNSF manifest. The train is still rolling slow to give the Moffat Tunnel a chance to vent.

The rainy summer that Colorado has had this year has really helped to keep the foliage green! A BNSF manifest heads west on the main at Tolland.

Three days into May, but there still a LOT of snow left in the high country. The eastbound California Zephyr passes through Tolland running right on time.

The Ski Train hustles down the main track at Tolland, indifferent to the extremes of the weather surrounding it. Inside the Kansas, a group of passengers enjoy the view out the back.

Brrrr...it was freezing up at Tolland on this March afternoon. Not entirely because of the temperature outside, but because of the mix of the temperature and the wind! The Ski Train has a clear signal at Tolland. Note the yellow school house in the distance, just above the cab of the third F40PH.

Despite how this image might look, it really isn't snowing! The wind is howling and kicking up a ton of sitting snow though as the Ski Train crosses the grade crossing at Tolland.

A few trees are preventing this view from being really fantastic. The curve that the Zephyr is approaching in the distance leads into East Portal. In another mile, the Zephyr will be in the Moffat Tunnel under the Continental Divide, towering in the background.

It is quite possible that you have seen pictures from this location before (although not on my site until today!) ... One of those locations that I have always said "I'll get to it one of these days". Well, the day finally came! The westbound California Zephyr crosses over the road to East Portal as it makes its way toward the Moffat Tunnel. Note how difficult it would be to add a second track through here (if Tolland and East Portal were ever connected, as has been proposed in the past).

The familiar face of a P42DC shows itself as it comes around the corning on the main between Tolland and East Portal. On the western slope, the Ski Train has unloaded its passengers and is in the clear, allowing Amtrak to continue running right on time.

Amazing to think that this train, in one form or another, has been running on these rails for nearly 70 years! The last two cars here (Utah and Kansas) were business cars on the Rio Grande and were often seen on the back of Amtrak between Denver and Salt Lake. Now, they have a home on the Ski Train. It should be noted that back then, the Kansas was named the Wilson McCarthy.

Between the wind from nature and the wind whipped up from Amtrak, a lot of snow is blowing at the east portal of the Moffat Tunnel. This shot was rough to get as I could barely hold the camera level due to the high winds!

More than 9,000 feet above sea level, the westbound California Zephyr is on the main passing a UP manifest holding up on the siding at East Portal. Amtrak is about to plunge into the 6.2 mile long Moffat Tunnel. The manifest has been stuck in the hole while waiting for an eastbound coal load and now Amtrak.

A coal load that just emerged from the Moffat Tunnel is on its way east. It is at the grade crossing near the east end of East Portal here. It will meet the westbound California Zephyr at Tolland and then have clear signals all the way into Denver.
